THE ACADEMY OF VITALOGY · A READING COLLECTION · THE FREEDOM OF THE SPARK
Guarding the Spark
Ten lessons in protecting consciousness. How do we remain curious, free, thoughtful and creative in a world competing for our attention? Not by condemning everyone else’s pleasures, and not by closing our minds. We begin by noticing what enters our lives, asking what it does to us, and choosing what deserves to stay.
The Dempire is a fictional symbol of coercion, manipulation and the reduction of people to tools. It is not a label for someone who enjoys different music, games, films, beliefs or pastimes. This collection explores the freedom to choose our inner lives with kindness, humour and care.
Where to begin: Read the first two parables together. One explains why consciousness deserves protection. The other explains why protection need not mean closing ourselves to the world.
I. Why consciousness matters
1. The Animal Called Consciousness — A Vitan Parable
A beautiful creature called Consciousness wanders the forests of Being. Its hunters use brightness, curiosity and distraction rather than chains. A story about why attention and freedom deserve protection.
2. The Parable of the Screen Window
Plum opens the windows to let in fresh air—and discovers that insects come in too. A wise mind welcomes new ideas without letting every intrusion settle inside.
3. The War on Consciousness
The fictional Star Concord and Dempire represent two ways of treating conscious beings: protecting dignity and freedom, or reducing people to instruments.
II. Learn to hold the helm
4. Becoming the Captain of Your Mind
Lt. Renzin Takashi teaches the art of noticing thoughts without obeying each one. The bridge of a spaceship becomes a metaphor for calm attention and self-command.
5. Curating Consciousness: The Quiet Power of Digital Frames
The images and memories we choose to keep around us can make everyday life richer. A hopeful example of designing an environment that reflects what matters.
6. Fast Food and Home Cooking: The Mental Diet
An extended analogy between mass-produced entertainment and the satisfaction of making your own creative nourishment. The original is long and at times pointed; readers can take the constructive metaphor without sharing every criticism.
7. The Primacy of the Immediate
An invitation to care for the world you can actually touch: a room, a relationship, a neighbour, your body, your next thoughtful action.
III. Make something beautiful
8. Create Your Own Media Universe, and You’ll Be Happier, Spark
Instead of only consuming other people’s stories, make your own: music, drawings, adventures and imaginative worlds. Creative agency can be a joy in itself.
9. The Digital Campfire
Imagine a corner of the internet that invites conversation and storytelling rather than demanding applause. A hopeful vision of technology built around companionship.
10. The Power of Attention: Reclaiming It
A practical closing reminder: attention is finite and valuable. We can become more deliberate about the thoughts, habits and experiences we allow to shape our days.
A simple practice
The next time something demands your attention, try three questions: Is it true? Is it worth my time? Does it help me live or love more wisely? You may still choose the silly video, the game or the song. A freely chosen pleasure is not a failure of discipline.
Protecting consciousness is not about becoming grim or suspicious. It is about making room for learning, humour, rest, friendship, art and the simple wonder of being alive.
