A Spark Was Here

Officers and citizens gathered around a table in a warm Concord hall

Plum has come to think of art as a kind of graffiti. Not merely paint on a wall, but a conscious being leaving a little evidence of having lived.

I was here. I saw something. I felt something.

The first mark

Imagine an ancient human pressing a pigment-covered hand against a cave wall. We cannot know precisely what that person intended. Maybe it was ritual. Maybe play. Maybe a record of belonging. Yet a handprint remains: a reminder that someone stood there, breathing and experiencing the world.

Is writing a song so very different?

Art is not a competition

A child drawing a crooked picture of her family is making art. So is an old man humming a melody nobody else will hear. A poem may be clumsy. A song may be imperfect. But the experience behind it is real.

We sometimes behave as though creativity needs permission from talent, fame, or an audience. It doesn’t. You do not need to sing like a professional to sing. You do not need to paint a masterpiece to paint.

Plum writes songs. Some are good, some less so, and now and then one is a delightful surprise. That is a fine reason to keep writing them.

Leave something of yourself

You see the world from a vantage point nobody else will occupy quite as you do. You notice particular colours, love particular people, laugh at peculiar jokes, and carry stories nobody else could tell in exactly the same way.

Write something. Draw something. Take a photograph. Tell a story. Dance badly. You need not publish the result or sell it. Creation is worthwhile even when it remains private.

Across the years

Someday, a song may make a stranger smile. A photograph may be discovered in a drawer. A few words may reach another Spark long after their writer has gone.

Perhaps art is consciousness reaching outward, hoping to be recognized by another consciousness.

I see you. I am here too.
